Biotin supplementation can be important for healthy nails.* Human studies have examined the effects of biotin supplementation (2,500 mcg per day for up to six months) in women with brittle fingernails. Results showed clinical improvement in 63-91% of the participants.* Furthermore, one of the studies used an electron microscope to assess fingernail thickness and splitting—fingernail thickness was shown to increase by 25% and splitting also decreased with biotin supplementation.*
Symptoms of biotin deficiency include hair loss, which is probably why biotin is often considered an important nutrient to promote healthy hair.* Although severe biotin deficiency is considered rare, research suggests that marginal biotin deficiency may be more common than previously thought. Evidence indicates that approximately half of the pregnant women in the USA are marginally biotin-deficient, despite a normal dietary biotin intake. Likewise, biotin deficiency has also been reported in individuals taking certain medications, or who consume excessive alcohol.
Biotin also plays an important role in energy metabolisim within the body. This vitamin helps with the formation of glucose (or blood sugar) from non-carbohydrate sources, such as the amino acids from protein.* This chemical reaction is why this B vitamin can help give you more energy
